Theological fun fact of the day. I think this guy nails it!
- First John 3:6–10 is one of the most frightening passages in the Bible:
“No one who abides in him keeps on sinning; no one who keeps on sinning has either seen him or known him. Little children, let no one deceive you. Whoever practices righteousness is righteous, as he is righteous. Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil. No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God’s seed abides in him, and he cannot keep on sinning because he has been born of God. By this it is evident who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is the one who does not love his brother.”
“While 1 John 3:6–10 doesn’t mean that real Christians never sin (or that when a Christian sins, he forfeits his salvation), it still means something deathly serious. True Christianity is incompatible with “whoever makes a practice of sinning.” There are many admonitions in the Bible to this effect: if you continue in unrepentant sin, you have cause to doubt your salvation. Those captured by grace find sin more and more bitter and obedience more and more sweet. This is the natural outpouring of worship supposed by James when he writes, “You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone” (James 2:24)”
Take away: failing to defeat a sin is not cause to doubt salvation. However, leaving sin in your life without repenting probably does! What’s the difference? The difference is that when someone is saved, he/she begins to grow in hating what christ died for and loving what he died to give you: obedience. This means that the alcoholic who struggles yet hates his sin and repents everytime begging for christ to save him – is saved and will leave his sin whether he still struggles with it all of his life or not. The one who “makes a practice of sinning” is the alcoholic that refuses to acknowledge his choices are a problem and goes on in his pride thinking nothing is wrong. This one is a serious danger to the soul.
